One of this year's nominees for the Waterstones' Children's Book Prize is 'The Queen's Hat' by Steve Antony. The story sees a gust of wind take the Queen's hat, and begin a chase by the Queen and her Guards across London, passing Trafalgar Square, London Zoo, Big Ben and more. The pictures are large with subtle Union Flag colours, with the Guards clambering across and up whatever obstacle on the London city skyline confronts them, led by a daring Queen. Antony's work either tips the hat to, or has similarities to, 'Katie in London' (see earlier post); Mary Poppins, Humpty Dumpty and the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. It is a delightful book with a charming ending, which begs to be read and re-read again and again. Oh, and as it stars a hat, it gets a big thumbs up from the Hatpeople!
