Gruffalo author, Julia Donaldson, has a new book out. ‘What the Jackdaw Saw’ with a special message.
A few posts ago we covered the four American students who had worked together in a series of sessions to create ‘Scruff E. Lion Finds a Friend’, Julia’s latest book was created through similar work with a group of students.
Working with the Life and Deaf Association (a therapy project for deaf children to raise self-esteem), Julia worked with deaf children from a Greenwich school in London to create the book based upon their ideas and title.
The book has a hearing Jackdaw inviting the other animals to a party, however they can’t hear and are trying to warn the Jackdaw of danger ahead via sign language. This gives the opportunity for young readers to learn about sign language, and also introduce to them some signs that they can learn as a first step to the language.
Julia’s article is a great read of the process and issues that created and published this book under Julia’s publishers Macmillan.
